What Will People Remember About Your Next Video?

Right now, there are about one billion users on YouTube watching about half a billion hours of video every single day. There has been more video footage uploaded online during any given 30-day period recently than major TV networks in the U.S. have created during three decades. Clearly, consumers love watching videos online, and that’s great news for your marketing campaign. All your business has to do is find that one hook for your next video that will have your audience coming back for more.

Include a comedic element (when appropriate).

Almost every type of business can benefit from incorporating humor into their marketing strategy. Of course, there are exceptions. If you run a funeral home or criminal defense law firm, you should stay away from humor. But most businesses can engage their audiences by including a comedic element in their videos.

Speak to your audience’s sense of nostalgia.

Nostalgia touches the heart in a warm, friendly way. It builds brand trustworthiness, but only if the video is genuine and authentic. Nostalgia marketing is like comfort food. It psychologically transports viewers back to a time they remember fondly when the world seemed like a less complicated place and their problems didn’t seem all that serious. Consider what your target audience might remember from their childhood or early adulthood and look for ways of speaking to that sense of nostalgia.

Do something unexpected.

Your audience will remember your video more vividly if you do something unexpected. As an example, picture a standard car commercial. It’ll show the car being driven on majestic mountain roads or in any number of unlikely scenarios. Years ago, a private seller trying to unload his 1996 Suzuki Vitara made a dramatic video depicting his car being driven in exactly those unlikely scenarios. But then, he took things a step further, showing his car maneuvering around dinosaurs from Jurassic Park, outsmarting sharks on the ocean floor, and speeding past a deadly avalanche. Needless to say, he got a couple thousand offers to purchase his car, and millions of views. This ad succeeded because it included unexpected twists that parodied traditional car commercials.
