Once a camera is on a someone, that person may have a little bit of trouble acting natural. It’s a problem that a lot of actors have to face. While stage acting requires that you act out to the audience, acting on film is a bit more of an intimate experience. It’s very easy to let the fact that you’re getting filmed get inside of your head. However, there are a few ways to ensure that you look natural in front of a camera.
Know Your Message
Confidence is key. Whether you’re memorizing lines for a script or your speaking directly to the audience, you need to know what your message is. Confidence in what you’re saying is going to translate to confidence on the screen. If you’re unsure about what you’re saying or you don’t have your lines memorized, it’s going to show on camera.
Don’t Acknowledge the Camera Too Much
For those that are filming movies or TV shows, noticing the camera is a form of breaking the fourth wall. Unless it’s intentional, you never want to do it. Those that are new to film and TV filming can find the filming process a little jarring. People are in your faces with cameras and you just have to act like they aren’t even there. It takes a little getting used to. You just have to remember that it’s part of the process. Act like the cameras aren’t even there, and go on with your lines the way you normally would.
Pay Attention to Your Body
It’s very easy to act stilted and robotic when a camera is in front of you. When acting on the stage, you have the entire stage to act out and do your blocking. When acting on camera, you may feel you’re more confined since you have to stay within the frame. Pay attention to how you body moves and don’t go overboard with gestures.
All in all, looking good and natural on camera takes time, focus, and patience. Once you get the hang of it, it will become second nature to you. For those that want more information for film production, take a look into company Film Creations.
